Tokyo, 2 October 2026 – SoftBank Group has completed the final US$10 billion tranche of its US$30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI, bringing one of the Japanese technology investor’s largest artificial-intelligence commitments to its planned close. The transaction, executed through SoftBank Vision Fund 2 on 1 October Japan time, raises the group’s cumulative investment in OpenAI to US$64.6 billion and gives it an ownership interest of approximately 13%.
The completed funding marks the third and final tranche of an investment programme announced in February. For investors, the scale matters not only because of the capital committed, but because it further concentrates SoftBank’s portfolio around a private company positioned at the centre of the generative-AI ecosystem. That exposure offers the prospect of significant value creation if enterprise and consumer adoption continues to expand, while also increasing sensitivity to OpenAI’s execution, financing requirements and eventual valuation path.
