New York, 21 September 2026 – World leaders are gathering for the United Nations General Assembly’s high-level week as multiple wars, artificial-intelligence governance, climate risks and financial strain test the capacity of multilateral institutions. Representatives of all 193 member states are expected, with about 130 heads of state or government attending a programme that places geopolitical fragmentation alongside economic and technological challenges increasingly relevant to investors.
The general debate begins on Tuesday against a crowded conflict agenda. Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar and tensions involving Iran are among the issues shaping diplomatic meetings. Each carries humanitarian consequences and market implications through energy prices, food supply, sanctions, shipping routes, defence spending and sovereign risk. The number of simultaneous crises also makes coordinated action harder, increasing the probability that bilateral and regional arrangements will fill gaps.
