Tokyo, 20 September 2026 – Nippon Life Insurance plans to build a ¥2 trillion, or approximately US$12.75 billion, infrastructure-financing portfolio that includes United States data-centre construction, positioning long-duration insurance capital behind the global expansion of artificial-intelligence computing. The programme would use project-finance structures in which loans are repaid from cash generated by the underlying assets.
The insurer views US project-finance investments as capable of delivering average spreads above 2%, while diversifying its asset base. It is also considering loans for Japanese data-centre projects by the end of fiscal 2026 and aims to double its outstanding infrastructure-financing balance to ¥2 trillion by fiscal 2035, adding new projects faster than existing loans are repaid.
