Singapore, 21 August 2026 – Singapore plans to build a new 670MW combined-cycle gas turbine to meet rising power demand, highlighting the difficult balance between electricity security and a lower-carbon transition. The project offers additional firm capacity, but its investment case will depend on utilisation, fuel costs, regulation and how quickly cleaner alternatives become available.
Gas-fired generation can provide dependable power when demand is high or renewable output is variable. For Singapore, reliability is particularly important as industry, data centres and electrification increase load. A modern combined-cycle plant can also be more efficient than older units, potentially reducing fuel consumption per megawatt-hour. Those benefits must be weighed against emissions and long-term asset-life risk.
