Malaysia and Australia Explore Deeper Rare-Earth Cooperation

Putrajaya, 12 August 2026 – Malaysia and Australia are exploring closer cooperation in critical minerals and rare-earth processing, including the possibility of developing domestic neodymium magnet manufacturing as both countries seek more resilient supply chains.

The discussions involved Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup and Australian High Commissioner Danielle Heinecke. They covered opportunities to strengthen Malaysia’s position beyond mineral extraction by building midstream processing and downstream manufacturing capability under the National Mineral Policy 3.
