Seoul, 3 August 2026 – South Korean equities retreated on Monday as semiconductor heavyweights Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix surrendered part of their record-breaking gains from the previous session, underscoring the volatility surrounding Asia’s artificial intelligence investment theme.
The reversal followed an extraordinary Friday rally in which the Kospi advanced nearly 18%, supported by a 27% surge in Samsung Electronics and a 30% jump in SK Hynix. The latter marked its largest single-session gain since its market debut in the 1990s.
