When 10 Minutes Tell a Thousand Stories: Short + Sweet Theatre Festival Returns to KLPAC

Performers at Short + Sweet Malaysia bring to life bite-sized stories that prove emotion, humour and truth can bloom within just ten minutes.

Eighteen years on, Short + Sweet Malaysia Festival continues to redefine what the stage can be. Birthed in Australia and now embraced around the globe, the festival thrives on one daring idea: limit time, not imagination.

At Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC), the annual celebration once again transforms October into a five-week carnival of artistic adrenaline — film, stand-up, song, dance, musical and, perhaps most hotly anticipated, theatre.

Helmed by Malaysia’s legendary Dato’ Dr. Faridah Merican, with Joe Hasham OAM as Artistic Director, Short + Sweet Malaysia has grown into a rite of passage for emerging talent and a laboratory for fresh voices who dare to say something new — in ten minutes or less.

“Each work is 10 minutes or under… you’ll get to see not just one but many different works in one night — some crazy, some ridiculous and some outrageous,” says the festival’s team, promising another year of laughter, reflection, and the occasional gasp.

Ten Minutes to Captivate — Or Crash

What makes Short + Sweet so thrilling is its gamble. Each piece lives or dies by the clock. No safety net, no drawn-out build-up. In that brief span, creators must hook, move, and end with impact — and the audience decides who wins.

The festival isn’t just a showcase; it’s a competition. Every audience member becomes a critic, voting for favourites in the Audience Choice Award before the Festival Director announces the winners in an intimate prize-giving ceremony.

Week 1: Friendship, Fear & Frenzy

Opening 10–11 October 2025, Week 1 brings a whirl of comedy, absurdity and sharp social mirrors.
From the chaotic mischief of Kit atau Kat??? by Penari Balai Raya, to the bittersweet Dora the Ex by The Explorers, every piece pulls the audience through emotional whiplash.

How To Not Get Robbed (While Being Robbed) by finaldraft.zip injects cheeky self-awareness, while UNDI by Artmosphere Lab flips civic anxiety into biting satire.
Meanwhile, Prom by Qayleef Productions and I’m OKay, yoU? by Namme Medai Production remind us how fragile human connection can be.

The elusive Violet Veil (title soon to be announced) keeps mystery alive, promising one of the festival’s most anticipated reveals.

Week 2: Voices Unfiltered, Realities Raw

The second weekend (17–18 October) deepens the conversation.
SEPI WANITA DALAM DUNIA LELAKI CELAKA by Same Size Production storms the stage with rage and wit, confronting gender imbalance with blistering honesty.
Then comes AKKAL BELLY (Huckleberry) by Deena Dakshini, a quirky meditation on identity and hunger — both literal and emotional.

சொல்லாமலே (Sollāmālē) by Curry & Co. weaves Tamil lyricism into universal longing, while Memoir Terakhir by Akademi Teater Rupawan Asli (ATRA) tenderly explores memory and mortality.

Other works shift tone and texture: Ten Minutes Together – Part 2 by JDEV Studios bends narrative form; FOTO(GRAF) by Aksara Rhymba blurs lens and life; and Radio Silenced by May Lynn Dominique Yeoh speaks for those whose voices history erased.

Closing the lineup, Kari Kambing, Extra Pedas by Kedai Kari Kak Ros serves cultural satire hot, followed by Revenge of the Papa from Nick’s Augustin Production, Complementary Tickets by Unity Production, and “Lagi Nak Tanya?” by Seloroh Production — proof that comedy remains Malaysia’s favourite form of truth-telling.

A Stage for Everyone — Literally

Beyond the performances, Short + Sweet extends its spirit of inclusivity through klpac Connect, an access programme supported by Yayasan Sime Darby.
It provides sponsored student tickets — prioritising public schools and first-timers from rural or out-of-state areas — to ensure that art reaches beyond the city’s core.

Families, students, and persons with disabilities can all find entry points through klpac Connect’s amenities and outreach efforts.

Why Short + Sweet Still Matters

In an era of scrolling and shrinking attention spans, this festival flips the curse of brevity into an art form. Each performance is proof that even in ten minutes, a story can change perspective, challenge bias, or move someone to tears.

Under Dato’ Dr. Faridah Merican’s steady helm and Joe Hasham’s artistic direction, Short + Sweet Malaysia remains not just entertainment but a social pulse check — a mirror to who we are, and who we’re becoming.

So come ready. Blink, and you might miss something extraordinary.
