New York, United States, 1 September 2026 – US equities ended lower as a sharp oil-price increase revived inflation and interest-rate concerns, although the major indices still secured monthly gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 374.09 points, or 0.70%, to 53,185.90. The S&P 500 declined 25.62 points, or 0.33%, to 7,686.14, while the Nasdaq Composite eased 31.53 points, or 0.12%, to 26,370.89. The Nasdaq recorded the strongest monthly percentage gain, and the Dow completed a fifth consecutive monthly advance.
Energy shares were the strongest sector as crude prices rose amid the US-Iran conflict and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. Halliburton and Valero Energy each gained about 1.9%. Utilities lagged, while PG&E fell 20.1% and GameStop rose 2.9%. Market pricing indicated a greater than 65% probability of a 25-basis-point rate increase in September. The immediate market response should be interpreted in the context of equity markets and energy-linked inflation. Headline figures provide direction, but the durability of the change will depend on implementation, counterparties and the broader cost of capital.
