SEOUL, 30 March 2026 – South Korea’s artificial intelligence (AI) chip startup Rebellions has raised US$400 million in fresh funding, underscoring intensifying global competition to challenge dominant players like Nvidia in the fast-growing semiconductor market.
The latest round values the company at approximately US$2.34 billion, marking a major milestone as it accelerates expansion into the United States and positions itself for a potential initial public offering (IPO).
A Rapid Funding Surge Signals Strategic Momentum
The funding round, led by Mirae Asset Financial Group and the Korea National Growth Fund, brings Rebellions’ total capital raised to US$850 million.
Notably, the company has secured over 75% of its total funding within the past six months, highlighting strong investor confidence amid the global AI boom.
The South Korean government-backed fund alone contributed about 250 billion won (US$165 million), part of a broader national push to develop a homegrown AI chip champion under the “K-Nvidia” initiative.
Challenging Nvidia with AI Inference Chips
Founded in 2020, Rebellions specialises in neural processing units (NPUs) designed for AI inference, running AI applications efficiently rather than training large models.
Its flagship Rebel100 platform is being scaled up to meet growing demand from:
- Cloud service providers
- Telecommunications companies
- Government-backed AI infrastructure projects
This positions Rebellions within a critical segment of the AI value chain, where demand is surging for cost-efficient and deployable AI systems, rather than just high-end training chips dominated by Nvidia.
Global Expansion and IPO Ambitions
With fresh capital in hand, Rebellions is entering what it describes as a “new phase of growth”, focusing on:
- Expanding operations in the US market
- Scaling production capabilities
- Preparing for a future IPO
The company is already targeting major AI labs and enterprise customers, signalling ambitions to compete globally rather than remain a regional player.
Backed by Strategic Investors
Rebellions has attracted a strong lineup of investors, including:
- Saudi Aramco’s Wa’ed Ventures
- Arm
- Samsung
- SK Hynix
- SK Telecom
This blend of global energy, semiconductor and telecom players reflects the strategic importance of AI chips across industries.
The Rise of “K-Nvidia” Strategy
The funding also highlights South Korea’s broader ambition to reduce reliance on foreign chipmakers and build a competitive domestic AI semiconductor ecosystem.
The “K-Nvidia” initiative, backed by regulators and ministries, is aimed at nurturing a globally competitive champion capable of rivaling US firms in the AI chip space.
This comes at a time when geopolitical tensions and supply chain risks are pushing countries to localise critical technologies.
The Ledger Asia Insight
For Asian investors, Rebellions’ funding milestone signals a critical shift in the AI landscape: the race is no longer just about software, but hardware dominance.
Several key implications emerge:
- Fragmentation of AI chip supply: Alternatives to Nvidia are gaining traction, reducing concentration risk
- State-backed tech ecosystems: Governments are increasingly funding strategic industries like semiconductors
- Asia’s rising influence: South Korea is positioning itself alongside the US and China in the AI hardware race
As AI adoption accelerates, the real battleground is shifting toward infrastructure, where chips, not chatbots, determine the winners.
Rebellions’ rapid rise suggests that the next Nvidia challenger may not come from Silicon Valley, but from Asia.
