Singapore, 24 September 2026 – A Singapore High Court judge has ordered a man to repay more than S$321,000 outstanding from money advanced by his former girlfriend, rejecting his argument that the transfers were gifts. The finance manager, Teow Seok Phen, had lent Chee Wei Jun nearly S$359,000 during their relationship, including savings and sums drawn through credit facilities. The decision illustrates how written communications and repayment behaviour can establish the character of private transfers when a relationship breaks down.
Teow said Chee sought help after claiming his bank account had been frozen following a fraudulent-link incident. She transferred funds and allowed him to use her credit cards. Chee disputed that the amounts were loans, saying they were given out of affection. The court assessed messages in which he promised repayment, partial payments he had made and later documents acknowledging debt. Justice Alex Wong concluded that the sums were intended to be repaid.
