Kuala Lumpur, 6 October 2026 – Malaysia’s Budget 2027 faces pressure to strengthen social protection for gig workers and older people, with external policy analysis highlighting gaps in unemployment coverage, pension participation and the adequacy of assistance as the country approaches aged-society status.
Gig workers remain outside conventional unemployment protection and the employment insurance system in many cases, despite platform work becoming a significant source of income. One proposal is a contributory arrangement supported by government matching, which could encourage participation without treating irregular earners as if they had stable monthly wages. The recommendation has not been adopted and its fiscal design remains open.
