SARA Aid Usage Soars Past RM145 Million in Just Two Days Despite Technical Hurdles

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 September 2025 – Malaysia’s one-off RM100 Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) cash aid has garnered significant uptake, with total spending exceeding RM145 million within the first two days of disbursement. This surge in transactions underscores both the effectiveness and fragility of the digital aid system.

System Strains Amid Strong Demand

On August 31, some 850,000 Malaysians spent over RM50 million on the first day alone. The sheer volume caused widespread system slowdowns at MyKasih terminals across retail outlets, forcing some users to pay out of pocket despite having valid credits. The Ministry of Finance and MyKasih have since issued apologies and assured that technical teams are working swiftly to restore normal operations.

Widespread Adoption Across the Country

The rapid uptake reflects the programme’s broad reach and accessibility—no applications are required, and 22 million adult MyKad holders are automatically eligible. The RM100 credit can be used for essential goods at over 7,000 MyKasih-partnered outlets nationwide, with the credit expiry set for 31 December 2025.

Looking Ahead: System Resilience & Regional Access

Despite the initial technical hiccup, the early usage figures signal strong engagement with digital aid mechanisms. The experience serves as a reminder of the infrastructure investments needed to support large-scale digital welfare programmes. As Malaysia continues its digital transformation in aid delivery, the importance of capacity-building and fail-safe systems is more apparent than ever.

Furthermore, equitable access remains crucial. Continued expansion of participating outlets—especially in rural states like Sabah where uptake has already been high—will be key to ensuring all beneficiaries can redeem their aid effectively.
