KUALA LUMPUR / SHAH ALAM, 10 September 2025 — National automaker Proton Holdings Bhd has surpassed the 100,000-unit sales mark for the year, fueled by its strongest monthly performance in three years. The August surge, driven by robust demand for both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) models, reinforces Proton’s position as Malaysia’s second-largest automotive brand.

In August alone, Proton delivered 15,228 units, the highest monthly total since 2022, bringing its year-to-date’s total to 100,902 units. According to a company statement, this achievement emerged amid an industry-wide increase in sales—the entire domestic market recorded 73,890 units sold that month. Proton’s market share rose to an estimated 20.6% in August, up 1.3 percentage points from July, and situates the company at a comfortable 19.5% for the year-to-date.

“This August was a monumental month for Proton. We achieved our best monthly sales performance in three years and crossed the six-figure sales threshold for 2025, a testament to our sustained momentum,” said Zhang Qiang, Deputy CEO of Proton Edar. He also expressed optimism for the rest of the year, citing new model introductions that will maintain sales momentum.

Newly launched models played a crucial role in the performance. The Proton X50 sold 4,287 units in August, following 999 units in July, resulting in over 5,000 deliveries within just 38 days of its market debut. ICE models—including the X50, S70, and X90—continued to dominate their respective market segments. The Saga maintained its legacy as Proton’s top-selling model with 6,331 units delivered in August, bringing its year-to-date tally to 44,676 units. The X70 also contributed with 627 units last month, lifting its annual total to 5,598 units.

On the EV front, the Proton e.Mas 7 emerged as Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicle. With 852 units sold in August and a year-to-date total of 5,811 units, it continues to outperform competing models. Looking ahead, Proton expects e.Mas 7 to gain further traction following the launch of its EV model in Singapore on 17 September and with the ramping up of local EV production at the newly commissioned Tanjong Malim plant.

Proton’s export performance is also trending upward. In August, the company exported 586 units, raising its year-to-date export figure to 3,144 units, which marks a significant 49% increase versus last year. Key export contributors include the X50, the Saga, and the e.Mas 7.
