Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, alongside his social media company X, has launched a high-stakes legal offensive against Apple and OpenAI, accusing them of orchestrating a monopolistic alliance that undermines competition in the artificial intelligence arena. In a federal lawsuit filed in Texas, Musk’s companies argue that Apple’s integration of ChatGPT into its ecosystem—covering iPhones, iPads, and Macs—grants OpenAI exclusive dominance in generative AI at the expense of rivals like xAI’s Grok chatbot.
The complaint contends that a closed-door arrangement between Apple and OpenAI effectively sidelines competing AI applications by making ChatGPT the default and only AI assistant built into Apple’s “Apple Intelligence” system. This, they claim, restricts consumer choice and solidifies OpenAI’s market position.
Further, xAI alleges that Apple has manipulated App Store rankings to demote Grok and other competing chatbots, depriving them of equal visibility and opportunity to reach users. According to the lawsuit, Apple’s preferential treatment of ChatGPT is a deliberate ploy to preserve its dominance in the smartphone ecosystem while suppressing emerging “super apps” that blend multiple functions.
Apple’s exclusive deal with OpenAI is seen by xAI as part of a broader pattern: by integrating ChatGPT across devices, OpenAI captures billions of user prompts, creating an insurmountable lead over other AI developers. xAI’s lawsuit seeks billions of dollars in damages and aims to dismantle what’s portrayed as “an unlawful agreement” that entrenches both Apple and OpenAI as monopolists.
OpenAI responded dismissively, characterising the lawsuit as consistent with Musk’s “ongoing pattern of harassment”. Apple, meanwhile, has not offered a public comment. The case echoes prior antitrust scrutiny involving Apple, highlighting growing legal pressure concerning fairness in app promotion and competition.
This lawsuit signals a pivotal moment in the crossroads between AI evolution and antitrust regulation—raising critical questions about how integrated tech ecosystems influence innovation and competition.
