Newark, New Jersey, 29 August 2026 – US approval of MIMRYLO, or rusfertide, has converted a clinical milestone into a major financial event for Protagonist Therapeutics while giving Takeda a first-in-class therapy for adults with polycythemia vera. The medicine is approved to treat erythrocytosis, the excessive production of red blood cells associated with the rare blood cancer. For investors, the decision validates both the drug’s mechanism and the partnership structure that carried it from discovery through commercialisation.
MIMRYLO mimics hepcidin, a natural hormone that regulates iron distribution. By limiting the iron available for red-blood-cell production, the once-weekly subcutaneous treatment is designed to keep haematocrit below 45%, a central treatment objective because thicker blood increases the risk of clots, stroke and heart attack. Many patients have relied on repeated phlebotomy to control haematocrit, creating a persistent treatment burden even alongside standard care.
