College Park, 23 September 2026 – Microsoft will give the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency direct, on-site access to quantum hardware at a new research centre in the University of Maryland’s Discovery District. The system will initially use Microsoft’s Majorana 2 processor, allowing government evaluators to load hardware, conduct their own boot procedures and test performance independently rather than relying only on remote access or company demonstrations.
The arrangement matters because quantum-computing claims are difficult for outside investors and customers to validate. Laboratory milestones can be technically meaningful without proving reliability, scalability or commercial usefulness. Independent access introduces a more demanding standard, giving DARPA the ability to examine whether the machine behaves consistently under external testing and whether its architecture can progress toward economically valuable computation.
