The company has restored the accounts identified as wrongly suspended, but the incident has renewed scrutiny of automated enforcement, appeal channels and the operational dependence many enterprises place on a single messaging platform.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said the error was found in more than half of the cases in the first batch it submitted to Meta. The problem was addressed at the end of September, and affected legitimate accounts were proactively restored, including some whose owners had not filed appeals. Meta also confirmed that it had not changed WhatsApp’s enforcement policies or terms of service.
