Wellington, 17 September 2026 – Malaysia is seeking deeper practical cooperation and stronger people-to-people ties with New Zealand as the countries prepare to mark 70 years of diplomatic relations next year. The message places established relationships at the centre of the bilateral agenda, while leaving the details of future initiatives to be developed.
Malaysian High Commissioner Abu Bakar Mamat outlined that objective at a National Day and Malaysia Day reception at Rumah Malaysia in Wellington. He described the friendship as a foundation for advancing the Strategic Partnership established in 2023 and recognised the Malaysian community and students in New Zealand as important connections between the countries.
