Malaysia and Japan Drive Thailand’s Weekly Tourism Rebound

Thailand’s weekly arrivals rose 5.72% as Malaysian and Japanese holiday travel lifted short-haul demand, although the year-to-date total remained lower.

Bangkok, 21 September 2026 – Thailand recorded a weekly improvement in foreign tourist arrivals as travel from Malaysia and Japan accelerated around regional holidays, offering a short-term lift to airlines, hotels, retailers and transport operators. The country received 464,200 international visitors from 13 to 19 September, up 25,131, or 5.72%, from the previous week, with short-haul markets providing most of the momentum.

Malaysian arrivals rose 29.12% week on week to 69,255, supported by travel during the Malaysia Day holiday. Japan contributed 30,494 visitors, a 55.36% increase ahead of the Silver Week holiday period. China remained a large weekly source market with 66,151 arrivals, up 1.18%, while Russian arrivals increased 7.59% to 19,531 as demand began building before the high season.
