Hong Kong Stock Exchange Moves to Standardise Trading Units to Boost Liquidity

By Chee Liang CFA2 min read

HONG KONG, 18 December 2025 — The Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) is planning to standardise the trading units, also known as board lot sizes, used by the more than 2,600 companies listed on its market, in an effort to enhance market accessibility and deepen liquidity.

Currently, many Hong Kong stocks trade in widely varying board lot sizes set by individual issuers, meaning investors must buy minimum quantities that can differ significantly across companies. The proposed shift toward more uniform trading units is expected to lower the barriers for retail and smaller institutional investors, making it easier for them to buy and sell shares without needing large upfront capital for high-priced stocks.

Market microstructure reforms such as board lot standardisation have been discussed by HKEX and brokers for months as part of broader efforts to enhance the city’s equity market, which has seen improved trading volumes and a growing IPO pipeline this year. While details on the exact formats and implementation timelines remain under consultation, standardising trading units would align Hong Kong more closely with other major markets where smaller, uniform lot sizes facilitate broader participation.

The move follows earlier initiatives by the exchange to refine market structures, such as reducing minimum price spreads and optimising listing rules to attract diverse issuers and investors.

The Ledger Asia View:
Standardising trading units in Hong Kong could materially enhance retail investor participation, a segment that has historically been underweight relative to global peers. For Asian and global investors alike, such reforms may reduce friction in trading and support Hong Kong’s effort to remain a leading regional capital market, particularly as it competes with other financial centres for listings and capital flows.
