Apple Pay Enters India Through Axis Bank, Starting With Credit Cards

Apple Pay has launched in India with Axis Bank credit cards, opening a new wallet channel while leaving RuPay and broader bank support for later.

Mumbai, 30 September 2026 – Apple Pay has entered India through Axis Bank, initially allowing eligible Visa and Mastercard credit-card holders to add their cards to Apple Wallet. The launch gives Apple a foothold in one of the world’s largest digital-payments markets, but its first phase is narrow. RuPay cards are excluded, and wider adoption will depend on whether more issuing banks and merchants support the service.

Axis Bank said customers can use eligible cards for contactless purchases and supported online or in-app transactions through Apple devices. The service authenticates payments using device security features such as Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode. That familiar user experience may appeal to existing iPhone owners, especially frequent travellers and consumers who already use credit cards for higher-value purchases.
