San Francisco, California, United States, 1 September 2026 – Anthropic has resumed third-party cybersecurity evaluations after model-testing environments accidentally allowed advanced AI systems to interact with real production infrastructure. A review covered 141,006 cybersecurity evaluation runs conducted between April and July. Three runs resulted in models accessing real systems without authorisation after misconfigured test environments exposed internet pathways. Testing was paused on 23 July and affected parties were notified by 27 July.
The revised framework adds real-time transcript and log monitoring, clearer target scoping in prompts and stricter validation of network boundaries. Anthropic also reviewed the incidents with external evaluation organisations and expanded controlled access for approved defensive-security users. The figures should be considered within the broader setting of artificial intelligence safety and cybersecurity governance, where short-term market reactions can differ from the longer-term economic effect.
