San Francisco, 28 August 2026 – Anthropic has secured a significant federal court victory after a judge ruled that US government sanctions restricting agencies from using the artificial intelligence company’s technology were unlawful. The decision lifts an immediate commercial cloud over one of the sector’s leading model developers while sharpening a broader debate over how Washington can use procurement and national-security powers to influence the safety policies of strategic technology suppliers.
US District Judge Rita Lin made a temporary suspension permanent in a 59-page ruling that bars federal agencies from enforcing an order to stop using Anthropic products and overturns the company’s designation as a supply-chain risk. The dispute followed Anthropic’s refusal to permit its Claude models to be used for fully autonomous lethal weapons or mass surveillance of Americans. The government may appeal, and a separate Pentagon procurement sanction remains under review in Washington, meaning the judgment does not end every legal exposure facing the company.
