Jakarta, 24 October 2026 – MSCI has opened a consultation on potentially reclassifying Indonesia from emerging-market to standalone-market status, citing concerns over ownership transparency, investor classification and concentrated shareholdings. Foreign investors have sold a net US$4.7 billion of Indonesian equities in 2026, increasing the stakes for regulators and listed companies.
The review matters to Asian investors because an MSCI downgrade could remove Indonesian shares from widely followed emerging-market benchmarks and force passive funds to sell. Market estimates place potential passive outflows at roughly US$3 billion to US$6 billion, while larger active-fund withdrawals are possible but not confirmed. The final outcome will depend on the consultation and credible market reforms.
