Kuala Lumpur, 5 October 2026 – Malaysia is preparing a risk-based artificial-intelligence law that would impose stronger safeguards on systems capable of causing significant harm, giving companies an early signal that governance and testing will become part of the cost of deploying AI at scale.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the AI Governance Bill is being drafted for possible tabling in early 2027. The proposed framework will classify obligations according to risk rather than regulating every application in the same way. High-impact systems would face stricter safety controls, testing and human oversight, while lower-risk uses could operate under lighter requirements.
