San Francisco, 30 September 2026 – OpenAI has introduced dots, always-on artificial-intelligence agents designed to pursue user goals across connected applications, marking a further push beyond chat-based assistance into continuous work. Unveiled at its San Francisco developer event on 29 September, the product is aimed at tasks that evolve over time rather than end with a single response. For businesses, the announcement raises both a productivity opportunity and a sharper question about operational control.
The company describes each dot as having its own cloud computer and browser, with access to connected tools. Dots are powered by its GPT-6 Astra model and can follow up through supported communication channels. The intended workflow is more autonomous than asking a chatbot to draft one document: an agent can track a goal, revisit changing information and prepare work for a person to review. Availability and permissions vary by account and workspace.
