Tokyo, 28 September 2026 – Japanese beverage companies are testing coffee-like drinks made with ingredients other than coffee beans as climate and cost concerns sharpen interest in alternative supplies. A reported product survey describes roasted brown-rice beverages, planned bean-free drinks from Asahi Soft Drinks and a new coffee-flavoured product under Coca-Cola Japan’s Georgia brand. The commercial question is whether these products can move beyond novelty into repeat purchases at a price that protects margins.
Japan imports almost all of its coffee beans, leaving roasters and beverage makers exposed to global harvest conditions, freight costs and exchange-rate movements. Climate threats to arabica cultivation add a longer-term strategic problem: firms want the taste and ritual consumers expect from coffee without relying exclusively on the crop. None of the new beverages removes that exposure for the wider industry today, but they give manufacturers another ingredient and pricing option.
