Segamat, 27 September 2026 – Malaysia’s campaign to return illegally imported electronic waste is moving into a larger operational phase, with border authorities reporting 436 containers re-exported this year and a further 578 scheduled to be sent back in stages from October. For importers, port operators and recyclers, the programme underscores that environmental compliance is becoming a material supply-chain issue rather than a matter confined to waste management.
The Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency said it is working with anti-corruption investigators, police, environmental officials and port authorities on the re-export operations. Its stated goal is to return all 1,259 identified containers by the end of 2026. The 578 containers are scheduled for future movement; they should not be counted as already shipped. Even if that stage proceeds in full, additional work would be required to reach the year-end total.
