Hangzhou, 25 September 2026 – A deliberately unconventional corner of China’s online retail market is becoming a measurable commercial category. Taobao says products featured in its Uglies initiative have generated 230 million yuan in sales since the awards programme began in 2020. That is a cumulative platform figure, not revenue from one exhibition or a single financial year, and it does not disclose profit margins or the number of participating merchants.
The latest signal is Taobao’s second Treasured Uglies Art Exhibition in Hangzhou, which brings online novelty products into a physical setting. This year’s event covers more than 1,200 square metres, nearly twice last year’s space, with over 30 installations and more than 500 products available on the platform. Organisers said daily attendance had risen to more than 5,000 people from an average of about 3,000 at the previous edition.
