Mumbai, 24 September 2026 – India’s central bank is reported to have used dollar-rupee swaps to withdraw cash from the banking system, a move that would give it another way to manage liquidity while inflation remains a concern. The reported scale is at least US$10 billion over recent weeks, but the figure comes from people familiar with private transactions rather than a published central-bank auction result, so investors should treat it as unconfirmed.

According to the accounts, the Reserve Bank of India entered sell-buy swaps with banks over roughly two weeks, with maturities ranging from one month to about six months. In the first leg, the central bank sells dollars and receives rupees, removing rupee liquidity from the banking system. It agrees to reverse that exchange later. The structure therefore differs from an outright dollar sale that permanently changes the RBI’s currency position.
