Petaling Jaya, 22 September 2026 – A Malaysian criminologist has urged the police to adopt artificial intelligence more systematically as online scams and digitally enabled crime become harder to investigate through conventional methods. Universiti Sains Malaysia’s P Sundramoorthy proposed a national AI command centre to bring together crime intelligence, mapping, cybercrime monitoring and network analysis. The proposal is expert advice, not an announced government procurement programme, and investors should treat any potential technology demand as conditional on policy and budget decisions.

Those are reported loss totals for different periods, not directly comparable annual rates. Even so, they show why fraud prevention is becoming a financial-sector and consumer-confidence issue. Banks, payment platforms, telecommunications groups and e-commerce operators share exposure when criminals exploit gaps between systems and jurisdictions.
