London, 16 September 2026 – UK consumer price inflation rose to 3.1% in August from 2.9% in July, as higher transport inflation renewed pressure on the headline measure. The official figures show an increase in the annual pace of price rises, but the unchanged core and services readings indicate that the movement should be interpreted with attention to its composition rather than treated as a uniform acceleration across the economy.
Consumer prices increased 0.5% during August, compared with a 0.3% monthly rise in August 2025. Core CPI, which excludes energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, remained at 2.6% year on year. Services inflation was unchanged at 3.4%, while goods inflation rose to 2.7% from 2.2%. These separate measures provide different information about the breadth and persistence of price pressure.
