European shares began September defensively as rising sovereign yields, firmer oil prices and mixed corporate moves sharpened investor scrutiny of valuations and policy risk.

London, United Kingdom, 1 September 2026 – European equities opened the month on a cautious footing as climbing long-term government-bond yields and firmer oil prices challenged investor confidence. The pan-European STOXX 600 fell about 0.2% to a level not seen for more than a week, while London’s FTSE 100 and Germany’s DAX each declined around 0.5%. France’s CAC 40 edged 0.2% higher, offering only limited relief as markets assessed a more demanding combination of funding costs, inflation exposure and uneven corporate performance.

The bond move was particularly important for equity valuation. Germany’s 30-year yield reached its highest level in roughly 15 years, while the equivalent French yield climbed to a peak not seen since 2008. Long-duration shares are especially sensitive when discount rates rise, because a greater portion of their expected value rests on future earnings. Higher sovereign yields can also increase borrowing costs for companies and households, tightening financial conditions even before central banks make another policy adjustment.
