Washington, United States, 1 September 2026 – Nine pharmaceutical groups have entered pricing arrangements intended to lower selected outpatient drug costs for state Medicaid programmes, extending the United States government's effort to tie domestic prices more closely to international benchmarks. The participating companies are UCB, BridgeBio, Sun Pharma, Teva, Astellas, Alcon, BeOne, CSL and Kyowa Kirin. Participation by state Medicaid programmes is optional, and the agreements focus on outpatient medicines. The administration says 26 companies now covered by its pricing initiative represent about 90% of the domestic pharmaceutical market.

Medicaid already receives statutory rebates, so the financial effect will depend on product mix, state participation and the interaction between the new discounts and existing rules. One analysis estimated that applying comparable terms to 82 high-cost medicines could generate more than US$8 billion in annual savings. Earlier agreements involved 17 companies and were linked to relief from threatened tariffs. The immediate market response should be interpreted in the context of healthcare policy and pharmaceutical pricing. Headline figures provide direction, but the durability of the change will depend on implementation, counterparties and the broader cost of capital.
