Universiti Malaya Honours Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai’s Legacy with RM1 Million Scholarship Endowment

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 February 2026 – Universiti Malaya celebrated the enduring philanthropic legacy of Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai, Founder and Executive Chairman of Top Glove Corporation Bhd, with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to establish the Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai Scholarship for Medicine and Wellness and the commemoration of the first anniversary of the Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai Medical Museum.

The event, themed “A Celebration of Legacy, Knowledge and Partnership,” was hosted by the Faculty of Medicine and marked a significant milestone in strengthening education, research, and healthcare development in Malaysia through sustained philanthropic collaboration.

RM1 Million Scholarship Endowment to Empower Future Healthcare Leaders

At the heart of the celebration was the formal signing of an MoA between Universiti Malaya’s Faculty of Medicine and Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai, accompanied by the presentation of a RM1 million mock cheque to establish a perpetual scholarship fund.

The scholarship is designed to support undergraduate and postgraduate students pursuing medicine and wellness programmes, reinforcing academic excellence and advancing research critical to Malaysia’s healthcare ecosystem.

The endowment will serve multiple strategic objectives, including:

  • Providing financial assistance to deserving and talented students
  • Supporting impactful research aligned with national healthcare priorities
  • Strengthening collaboration between academia and industry
  • Developing future leaders in healthcare, research, and medical innovation

Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Dato’ Dr Yang Faridah Abdul Aziz, emphasised the significance of the partnership.

“Today’s MoA reflects a partnership built on shared values, knowledge, service and lasting impact. It extends Tan Sri Dr Lim’s legacy at the Faculty of Medicine in a way that directly benefits students and strengthens the future of healthcare for our nation,” she said.

Building on RM2 Million Contribution to Medical Museum

The scholarship builds upon Tan Sri Dr Lim’s earlier RM2 million donation in January 2025, which funded the establishment of the Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai Medical Museum.

Launched on 25 January 2025, the museum serves as a centre for medical heritage preservation and education, bridging historical medical knowledge with modern scientific and educational advancement.

The facility has enhanced the learning environment for medical students while preserving Universiti Malaya’s legacy in medical education and research.

Strengthening Academia–Industry Collaboration and National Healthcare Development

Tan Sri Dr Lim highlighted the importance of education and healthcare as pillars of national progress.

“I believe in doing well by doing good. True progress comes from empowering others through knowledge, and good health is the foundation that enables people to learn, work and contribute positively. By supporting deserving students in medicine and wellness, we are shaping the future of healthcare in Malaysia,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the scholarship would inspire a new generation of medical professionals and innovators committed to advancing healthcare and contributing to society.

Alumni Leadership Reinforces Universiti Malaya’s Institutional Growth

Universiti Malaya Chairman Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar underscored the importance of alumni engagement in strengthening educational institutions and driving national development.

“Leadership by example matters; it encourages others to consider how they too might contribute whether through scholarships, mentorship, research collaboration or institutional partnership. When alumni engagement becomes part of institutional culture, the collective impact is strengthened,” she said.

The initiative reflects Universiti Malaya’s broader strategy of building sustainable partnerships with industry leaders to enhance educational excellence and national competitiveness.

Medical Biography Translation and Museum Anniversary Mark Knowledge Milestones

The celebration also marked the Bahasa Malaysia translation of Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai’s biography, titled “Mesti Tahu, Mesti Buat, Mesti Ajar,” further reinforcing his legacy and contribution to Malaysia’s corporate and healthcare sectors.

The translation effort was supported by Universiti Malaya’s Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, reflecting the university’s appreciation of Tan Sri Dr Lim’s longstanding contributions.

The commemoration of the medical museum’s first anniversary further highlighted Universiti Malaya’s commitment to preserving medical heritage while advancing future-focused healthcare education.

Investor and Corporate Perspective: Corporate Philanthropy Strengthens National Talent Pipeline

Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai’s philanthropic contributions reflect a broader trend of corporate leaders investing in education and healthcare to strengthen Malaysia’s long-term human capital development.

As Malaysia continues to expand its healthcare infrastructure and medical innovation ecosystem, initiatives such as scholarship endowments and educational partnerships play a critical role in building future talent.

For corporate Malaysia, such initiatives reinforce the importance of sustainable leadership, social responsibility, and long-term investment in national development.

Tan Sri Dr Lim’s legacy continues to demonstrate how corporate success can translate into meaningful societal impact, strengthening education, advancing healthcare, and shaping future generations of leaders.
