Kuala Lumpur, 7 November 2025 – The Malaysian ringgit has climbed to its strongest level in over a year as expectations of a stable policy rate by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and renewed optimism around the country’s economic growth bolster investor sentiment. The currency’s rally comes against the backdrop of resilient domestic demand, controlled inflation and favourable export prospects, positioning Malaysia as one of Asia’s top-performing currencies this year.
Analysts note that the ringgit’s strength reflects a combination of factors: Malaysia’s cautious monetary policy stance, with BNM standing pat at an overnight policy rate of 2.75 %, compared to regional peers signalling rate cuts; a well-diversified export base that includes electronics and manufacturing; and foreign-capital inflows seeking Southeast Asia’s stable growth corridors.
“The ringgit is hovering near its strongest level in a year … buoyed by expectations that the central bank will keep policy rates steady and by renewed optimism in the nation’s growth outlook.”
However, the currency’s performance remains sensitive to external headwinds. A stronger U.S. dollar, shifts in commodity prices, or a change in global risk sentiment could reverse gains. Domestic inflation staying above target or disappointing export data would also complicate the outlook.
For investors across Asia, Malaysia’s currency story presents a compelling case of macro-resilience. With the ringgit’s appreciation standing out, regional asset-allocators may favour Malaysian equities and bonds as hedges against weaker currencies in neighbouring economies, albeit with the caveat that the central bank will likely retain flexibility in its intervention and policy setting.
