Taicang, 31 July 2026 – China completed a record-setting breakthrough on a high-speed rail tunnel beneath the Yangtze River, demonstrating the engineering depth behind its continuing transport buildout. The project strengthens connectivity in the Yangtze River Delta and reinforces China’s ability to execute complex infrastructure at scale.
The underwater section extends for more than 11 kilometres and used a domestically developed large-diameter shield machine. That combination matters because tunnelling technology, precision manufacturing and project management can become exportable capabilities as other countries expand urban and intercity networks.
