Hanoi, 29 October 2026 – Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group, known as Vinacomin, plans to keep coal production at about 40 million metric tonnes a year through 2030 to supply domestic power demand. The plan includes 18 mining projects in Quang Ninh, while the group expects to import between 10 million and 20 million tonnes annually to supplement local supply.
For Vietnam’s manufacturers, utilities and investors, the decision signals that coal will remain a material part of the country’s energy-security architecture even as renewable capacity expands. The reported figures are production and import plans rather than completed output; the immediate implication is that fuel availability, logistics and power-system reliability remain central to industrial competitiveness and to the cost assumptions behind new projects.
