Tokyo, 25 September 2026 – Japan’s finance minister says US President Donald Trump raised the weakness of the yen during a meeting with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, bringing currency policy into the foreground of bilateral discussions. Satsuki Katayama said on Friday, after consulting the prime minister’s office, that Takaichi acknowledged an undervalued yen was problematic as a general principle. The account describes a concern expressed at a summit, not a new exchange-rate target or an announced intervention.
The distinction matters to markets. A leader’s comment can influence expectations, but it does not by itself commit either treasury to buying yen, changing interest rates or defending a particular dollar-yen level. Traders will look for corroborating statements, official operational data and market moves before concluding that policy has changed. For now, the reported exchange signals heightened political attention to currency weakness.
