KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul will announce on Monday his decision regarding an incident in which a Member of Parliament allegedly challenged another to a fight outside Parliament.
“I have directed all relevant parliamentary units, including those handling video and audio recordings, to collect evidence on the matter.
“If proof emerges of such conduct or an attempt to physically attack, I will take stern action. Physical confrontation is a red line that must not be crossed. While I am not accusing anyone at this stage, I have ordered a thorough investigation, and the findings will be made public on Monday,” he said.
The incident reportedly took place yesterday during debates on the 13th Malaysia Plan, when proceedings descended into a shouting match after an opposition MP labelled RSN Rayer (PH–Jelutong) a kafir harbi — a term used for non-believers perceived as opposing Islam.
Tensions flared when Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim (PN–Pendang) accused the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) of failing to deliver aid. Shortly afterwards, videos circulated online showing Awang making gestures interpreted as a challenge to fight outside the chamber.
Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong has urged firm action against Awang.
“It was broadcast worldwide — everyone saw what happened in the Dewan Rakyat. If we talk about tackling bullying, this must be treated seriously. Yesterday, Pendang tried to fight another MP. This is the kind of behaviour that should never occur,” he said.
