Singapore, 3 November 2026 – Singapore plans to prioritise stronger action against transboundary haze when it assumes the ASEAN chairmanship in 2027, renewing attention on a persistent environmental and economic challenge across Southeast Asia.

Singapore will also support efforts to establish the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Transboundary Haze Pollution Control in Indonesia. The announcement signals renewed political attention, but it does not introduce new binding enforcement powers.
The more important question is whether stronger regional coordination can produce measurable improvements in haze prevention.
