Singapore, 26 October 2026 – Singapore plans to use its 2027 ASEAN chairmanship to advance the ASEAN Power Grid, seek agreement on a regional submarine power-cable framework and strengthen cross-border renewable-electricity trading. The Energy Market Authority said the agenda will address legal, regulatory and commercial barriers while developing a common framework for renewable-energy certificates across Southeast Asia.
The initiative matters to Asian businesses and investors because regional electricity links can widen access to renewable generation, improve system resilience and create bankable demand for transmission, subsea engineering and grid-management services. The policy direction is confirmed, but adoption will still require agreement among member states, national regulators and utilities; project timing and returns therefore remain subject to negotiation and execution.
