Sapura Industrial and Asia Pacific University Partner on EV Training and Smart Manufacturing Initiatives

By Abigail Cheong3 min read

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 September 2025 — Automotive component manufacturer Sapura Industrial Bhd has formalised a five-year strategic collaboration with Asia Pacific University Sdn Bhd (APU) to develop cutting-edge training programmes focused on electric vehicles (EV), hybrid maintenance and servicing, as well as business transformation through smart manufacturing. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) signals Sapura’s commitment to upskilling its workforce and aligning its operations with future automotive trends.

Under the MoU, Sapura and APU will co-create academic curricula and technical training modules, including certification programmes, that incorporate industry-relevant skills in EV system diagnostics, hybrid vehicle servicing, Internet of Things (IoT) integration, data analytics, and performance optimisation. Sapura has additionally earmarked the establishment of a dedicated EV and Hybrid Service Centre in Kuching to serve as both a training hub and servicing facility for electric and hybrid vehicle technologies.

Strategic Imperatives and Industry Context

Sapura’s move comes at a time of rapid transformation in the global automotive industry, where EV adoption, stricter emissions regulations, and digital integration are challenging traditional supply and manufacturing models. For Malaysian manufacturers to stay competitive, there is growing urgency to develop domestic capabilities in EV maintenance and smart factory technologies. The partnership with APU gives Sapura a training-pipeline advantage.

Smart manufacturing, which includes IoT, data analytics, and performance optimisation, is seen not only as an efficiency lever but also as a means to reduce production cost, improve quality consistency, and enable faster response to evolving product requirements. By embedding these capabilities in its operations and employee skill sets, Sapura is aligning with both market demand and national policy trends toward sustainability, electrification, and industrial modernization.

Implications for Sapura, Stakeholders, and Investors

For Sapura, the MoU represents a dual opportunity: to future-proof its technical workforce and to position itself favourably in the EV supply chain. The creation of training and servicing infrastructure in Kuching also adds physical asset base and geographic reach, potentially working as both revenue centre and cost centre depending on utilisation.

From an investor standpoint, the MoU and its related initiatives enhance Sapura’s long-term growth narrative. Key value-drivers may include:

  • Expanded service possibilities and aftermarket revenues from EV and hybrid servicing.
  • Cost savings or margin gains from improved manufacturing efficiency via IoT and analytics.
  • Enhanced human capital, reducing risk of skills bottlenecks as the industry evolves.

However, risks should be noted. The timeline for impact may be long, with return on investment depending on adoption rates of EVs in Malaysia and neighbouring markets, regulatory incentives for EVs, and Sapura’s ability to maintain quality and scale in training and smart manufacturing rollout. Additionally, competition from both domestic and international players in EV servicing could exert pricing pressure.

Outlook

As Sapura executes the MoU with APU over the coming years, indicators to watch include the pace of curriculum development, certification uptake, and utilisation rates of the Kuching EV and Hybrid Service Centre. Also critical will be how effectively smart manufacturing technologies are integrated in Sapura’s production lines and whether the upskilling of staff delivers measurable performance improvements.

If successfully implemented, this partnership may not only reinforce Sapura’s role as a proactive automotive components supplier, but also position it as a leader in Malaysia’s transition toward electrification and industrial digitalization.
