Shanghai, 10 August 2026 – China’s panda bond market is expanding rapidly, creating what one major investment bank describes as a historic opportunity to advance the yuan’s international use, although cheaper funding alone may not produce a durable global currency role.
Gross panda bond issuance reached 160 billion yuan, equivalent to about US$23.7 billion, in the first half of 2026. That represented growth of more than 60% from a year earlier and was accompanied by longer maturities, lower issuance yields and a broader group of borrowers.
