San Francisco, 4 September 2026 – OpenAI is committing US$1 billion in subsidised access to its Daybreak cyber-defence platform over six months, a large-scale initiative aimed at organisations protecting essential services and widely used digital infrastructure. The programme targets state and local governments, critical-infrastructure operators, community banks, non-profit organisations and open-source maintainers that often face sophisticated threats with limited specialist resources.
Daybreak combines frontier artificial-intelligence models, the Codex software-development harness, security-focused models, governed workflows and outside expertise. Its operating loop covers asset inventory, vulnerability discovery, dynamic validation, assignment of ownership, remediation and proof that fixes have been deployed. Human review, access controls and monitoring remain part of the design, an important qualification when automated systems are used against sensitive production environments.
