Wellington, 20 October 2026 – New Zealand imported NZ$16 billion of goods from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in the year ended September 2026, an increase of NZ$2.1 billion or 15% from a year earlier, according to Stats NZ. Imports from the 10-member bloc accounted for almost one-fifth of New Zealand’s NZ$92 billion total import bill.
For Southeast Asian businesses and investors, the figures show that New Zealand is becoming a larger customer for the region while remaining a smaller supplier in the opposite direction. New Zealand exported NZ$9.6 billion to ASEAN over the same period, up NZ$918 million or 11%, leaving a goods-trade gap of about NZ$6.4 billion in ASEAN’s favour. The data confirm stronger two-way activity, although they do not by themselves show how much of the increase came from prices rather than volumes.
