Kuala Lumpur, 18 September 2026 – Malaysia’s electricity sector could require up to RM95 billion of investment over the next decade to meet additional demand, according to a Moody’s Ratings estimate that puts capacity planning, project execution and financing discipline at the centre of the country’s power outlook.
The assessment indicates that Tenaga Nasional and independent power producers would need at least 14 to 17 gigawatts of additional installed generation capacity. The estimate assumes that demand is met predominantly through firm gas-fired generation operating at a 50% to 60% plant load factor. It is a scenario-based estimate, not an announcement that the full spending amount has been approved or committed.
