Kuala Lumpur, 20 October 2026 – Malaysia has been selected as the Voluntary Lead Shepherd of the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime Working Group on Money Laundering. The appointment was agreed during preparatory meetings in Makati ahead of the 20th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime, where officials also adopted the working group’s terms of reference.
For Asian banks, payment companies and investors, the leadership role matters because money laundering increasingly crosses borders through digital payments, shell companies, trade transactions and online scams. Malaysia’s appointment is confirmed, but it does not by itself create new regulations or enforcement powers. Its commercial impact will depend on the work programme, information-sharing arrangements and measures subsequently adopted by ASEAN members.
