Malaysia Repatriates RM39.1 Million in Assets from Fugitive Financier Jho Low

KUALA LUMPUR, 10 September 2025 — In another breakthrough in the prolonged 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) asset recovery effort, the Malaysian government has successfully repatriated US$8.57 million (RM39.1 million) tied to fugitive financier Low Taek Jho (Jho Low) and members of his family. The funds, part of a global civil forfeiture settlement facilitated by the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ), have been transferred to Malaysia’s 1MDB Asset Recovery Trust Account, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) confirmed today.

MACC’s announcement detailed that the recovery process was conducted with the assistance of Singapore’s Commercial Affairs Department. The agency noted that additional accounts associated with Jho Low’s family are slated for repatriation in the near future.

This latest recovery brings the total assets repatriated in connection with the 1MDB scandal to RM31.19 billion, factoring in a RM1.4 billion settlement from JPMorgan Chase & Co. Overall, U.S. authorities have seized over US$1.5 billion in assets tied to Jho Low, with a considerable portion already returned to Malaysia.

MACC attributed the success to sustained collaboration under the Multi-Agency Task Force (MATF)—inclusive of the Attorney General’s Chambers, Bank Negara Malaysia, the Royal Malaysia Police, and the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre.

Observers view the latest recovery as reinforcing Malaysia’s resolve in reclaiming stolen assets from the global 1MDB scandal—one of the largest kleptocracy cases in modern history. Every tranche recovered bolsters both fiscal restitution and public confidence in institutional accountability.
