Kuala Lumpur, 4 September 2026 – Malaysia Aviation Group is preparing for a more difficult FY2026 after a sharp rise in jet-fuel costs eroded the favourable operating momentum recorded during the first two months of the year. Management said jet fuel was around US$160 per barrel on the preceding day and had recently peaked near US$230, levels that materially increase the cost of operating an international network and place pressure on cash generation, ticket pricing and route economics.
The group has responded with targeted network adjustments rather than a broad retreat. Available seat kilometres have been reduced by about 5%, representing approximately 8,000 flights, as planners review demand and profitability market by market. The approach reflects the need to protect the network’s commercial core while avoiding capacity that becomes uneconomic when fuel prices rise faster than fares. As Malaysia’s national airline group, it must also balance financial discipline with connectivity that supports tourism, trade and business travel.
